(SOLD OUT) Simply Amazing Baravelle Spirals

A Spiral Quilt workshop with RaNae Merrill 

In this workshop, you will learn how to draw, color and sew a Baravelle spiral block, based on the techniques in  RaNae’s book Simply Amazing Spiral Quilts. (Books will be available for purchase at the workshop, but are not  required. To purchase a book in advance, go to www.ranaemerrillquilts.com and click on “STORE”.) We will  sew one block in class and you will receive a pattern to finish blocks into hot pads. Of course, you’re welcome  to keep making more to create a whole quilt! 

Materials Fee: There is a $20 materials fee which includes a fabric kit for two spirals, preprinted foundations  for the spiral blocks, printed paper templates, sewing instructions and a pattern. Kit fee will be paid directly to instructor in class.

Class Supplies Needed:

-Basic sewing tools: pins, scissors, etc.

-Scissors for paper 

-Light or neutral colored thread for sewing 

-45mm rotary cutter with ruler and mat   (preferably one that closes automatically)

-Fine-point permanent black pen

-Pencil and a fresh eraser

-Several sheets of white paper 8-1/2” x 11”

-Two highlighter pens in different colors  (orange, pink or yellow)

-4 plastic page protectors

-Dry-erase markers or crayons in several colors

-Scotch tape

-A full, new roll of double-sided scotch tape  (permanent, not removable. Scotch Brand   in the yellow/red box is best. Buy a fresh roll   at an office supply store. Old tape breaks and  cheap brands don’t stick well on fabric.) 

-Masking or painter’s tape 

-Add-a-Quarter tool with a card   (available for purchase in class)

-Seam roller (optional, but really helpful;   available for purchase in class)

-A gallon-size ziploc bag

Sewing Machines for students are being generously provided by Bernina/ Hinkletown Sewing Center

About Translucent Foundation Material:

Spirals are sewn using paper piecing, so they require a foundation material to which you sew the fabric.  I insist on foundation material that is translucent, which means you can see through it.  Since you can see through it, you put fabric on the front and sew from the back.  This means that you don’t have to think in mirror-image like you have to do on an opaque foundation.  (Traditional paper-piecers take note!) One brand is Fun-Dation.

For this workshop, foundations will be provided for you, preprinted on translucent foundation Sheets.  If you wish to purchase additional printed sheets or packages of blank sheets, they will be available in class.  Most quilt shops also have some version of it and you can purchase it through my online store at www.ranaemerrillquilts.com
