About the event

This English Paper Pieced quilt was inspired by Lucy Boston's famous Patchwork of the Crosses. It uses slightly larger honeycombs than the original and less space between the blocks, giving it a more modern feel and a quicker finish! You’ll learn all the how-to’s of basic English Paper Piecing techniques, a lovely method of hand stitching quilts. We will cover how to prepare your shapes (tacking, thread basting, and glue basting), hand stitching the shapes together, and fussy cutting your fabrics to create spectacular designs. Join us and discover why so many people love English Paper Piecing!

Pattern:

Lucy’s Terrace Quilt pattern by Tales of Cloth.  You will need to purchase the PDF download from the Tales of Cloth website.  Click here to purchase the pattern.

* Students must purchase a kit for class. Kit fee of $15 is added to your ticket price below.

Kit Contents (enough for one block):

1-1/4” Honeycomb acrylic template

(24) 1-1/4” Honeycomb paper shapes

Milliner/Straw needle, size 9 for thread basting or tacking

Milliner/Straw needle, size 11 for whip stitching shapes together

2  sewing clips

Bobbin of Bottom Line thread

If you wish to make the entire quilt, then you can either purchase additional pre-cut paper shapes (requirements are listed on the pattern), or use the printable templates included in the PDF pattern.  If you wish to use the printable templates, simply print them out onto card stock and cut them apart.

The square shapes can be purchased later when you are ready to join your blocks or can be easily cut using a rotary cutter and card stock.

Please bring the following supplies:

Thread: hand sewing thread for basting or tacking (I like to use a hand quilting thread.)

Fabric shears

Small thread snips

Paper punch for punching holes in the templates

Sewline glue pen:  if you prefer or want to try glue basting (I personally prefer thread

tacking.)

Reading glasses, if needed!

Additional Supplies:

Two 15” Mini Design Boards – I like to lay my fabric pieces out on a mini design board as I’m working with them.  If you aren’t familiar with a design board, click

here for Lori Holt’s tutorial on how to make them.  The 2nd board will make it easy to transport your pieces.

Optional Supplies:

Sue Daley’s Fussy Cutting Mirror

Sue Daley’s Rotating Cutting Mat

Ultra Fine Needle Threader (will also be available for cash purchase the day of class).

Fabric Requirements:

This quilt uses optional fussy cutting techniques which makes yardage requirements tricky to calculate because the fabric needed depends on the size of the repeat and how many repeats you need!  So, I would suggest purchasing enough fabrics for one block or bringing an assortment of fabrics along to play with in class; you’ll need four different fabrics for a block. No need to purchase fabric for the joining squares for class; you can purchase that later. Please refer to the pattern for more specifics on the fabric requirements. Keep in mind that you can stitch just a few blocks for a pillow or table runner, or you can make this quilt any size you like!

Any questions??  Don’t hesitate to contact me!  Looking forward to stitching with you!
