About the event
Kinusaiga – Japanese Fabric Mosaic Art
Kinusaiga is a traditional Japanese craft technique that creates intricate pictures using fabric pieces without sewing. Instead of stitching, the fabric is tucked into grooves cut into a baseboard (often styrofoam or wood) to form a mosaic-like image. This method allows for detailed, colorful designs that resemble paintings but are made entirely from textiles.
Key Features of Kinusaiga:
No sewing required – fabric edges are tucked into carved outlines.
Layered textures – different fabrics create depth and visual interest.
Vibrant patterns – often uses kimono fabric or other patterned textiles.
Artistic flexibility – can depict landscapes, animals, flowers, or abstract designs.
The image you provided appears to be a kinusaiga-style landscape, showing a stylized sun over hills, with each section made from different patterned fabrics. The bright colors and varied textures are characteristic of this art form.
*No additional kit fee
Supplies:
Participants should bring rotary cutters, cutting mats, small fabric scissors, and fabric scraps (preferably thin fabric).
Instructor will make some templates and designs that participants can use. However, if someone would like to create their own design, we recommend making their template ahead of time or at least knowing what design they plan to make. The foam board measures 4 x 6 inches. If participants want to make their own templates, they should plan for that size. Some extra foam boards will be available in case anyone wants to make different or irregular sizes or shapes.
