Pattern:
Treehouse Textiles “Bloom” Quilt pattern. You will need to purchase the PDF download from the Treehouse Textiles website here
Fabric requirements:
Please see pattern. You only need to bring supplies for several blocks for the day of class.
We will be covering two methods of applique in class: Freezer Paper and Starch Method (my favorite!), and the Fused Method.
Supplies required for each method:
Listed below are the supplies you will need for each method. You do not need to bring supplies for both methods unless you want to try both. If you're not sure which method you would like to do, feel free to bring supplies for both methods and experiment to see which you prefer.
1) Freezer Paper and Starch Method (hand or machine stitched):
With this method, the shape is prepared with freezer paper and spray starch. You then have the option of hand stitching or machine stitching the shapes onto the background squares.
Prep supplies:
-Freezer paper: Reynolds Freezer Paper or quilter's freezer paper
-Aerosol spray starch – plain old grocery store spray starch! (note - starch alternative products such as Best Press do not work for this method)
-Watercolor paint brush
-Roxanne Glue-Baste-It
Stitching supplies:
Hand method:
-Straw or milliner needle, size 11
-50 wt cotton thread in a neutral thread to match your flowers
-Thimble
Machine method:
-50 wt cotton thread in a neutral thread to match your flowers
2) Fused Method (machine stitched)
Prep supplies:
-Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 or Wonder Under (be sure to purchase a product suitable for machine stitching)
Machine Stitching supplies:
-50 wt cotton thread in a neutral or contrasting thread to stitch your flower shapes
For all methods, please bring a basic sewing kit containing:
-Pins
-Fabric shears
-Seam ripper
-Thread snips
Additional supplies
-Template plastic or lightweight cardboard
-Paper scissors for cutting templates
-Fine tip permanent marker
-Pencil
My favorite pressing boards, prefect for preparing applique shapes, will be available for sale during class.
Any questions??! Feel free to e-mail, text, or call me. Looking forward to stitching with you!
